Defensive Concealed Pistol course with Kris “Tanto” Paronto and Dave “Boon” Benton at Big3East By Heather Edlander

Big3East in Daytona Beach recently hosted Benghazi heroes Kris “Tanto” Paronto and Dave “Boon” Benton to instruct a Concealed Defensive Pistol course at Big3East’s range facilities.  This one day course was offered through Paronto and Benton’s very own tactical training company, Battleline Tactical.  Paronto, former Army Ranger and private security contractor, and Benton, former USMC Scout Sniper and private security contractor, were both on the CIA annex security team that responded to the terrorist attack on the U.S. Special Mission in Benghazi, Libya, on September 11th, 2012.  Both fought to save over 20 lives while fighting off terrorists from the CIA outpost called “The Annex” for over 13 hours.  The story of the event was told in the book “13 Hours” by Mitchell Zuckoff, which was subsequently made into the Hollywood movie, ” 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi”.

Battleline Tactical’s concealed carry pistol course included both classroom instruction and a full day of live fire exercises at Big3East’s range.  Tanto and Boon began the day with a discussion on concealed carry pistol safety, inside the waistband (IWB) pistol locations and the advantages and/or disadvantages of each location.

Heather is a very experienced shooter and is the newest of Big 3 East’s media correspondent.

After the instructors individually helped students smooth out their draws from concealment and refresh themselves on fundamentals of accurate pistol marksmanship, the students engaged targets from 3 to 25 meters from concealed draws in different scenarios designed to improve response time and accuracy.

Tanto and Boon led students through various shooting drills to improve skills such as strong side and support side shooting, and methods for rapid multiple target acquisition.  Students learned techniques for shooting from simple cover, and close range pistol engagement from concealment as well.

In the class we had a relatively new shooter, who initially expressed her nervousness at taking a class with what she perceived to be more advanced students.  Tanto and Boon worked with her to get her skills up to speed, and by the end of the class she was moving with confidence from the techniques they presented.  Once again, proof that pushing yourself out of your comfort zone can be a very rewarding experience.  She describes her experience in the course:

“As a mother of two children with a husband that travels extensively, I tend to be alone on many occasions.  I decided to take the Battleline Tactical course that was taught by Kris “Tanto” Paronto and Dave “Boon” Benton at Big 3 East in Daytona Beach, Florida.  At first, I was very nervous yet excited to take the one Day Concealed Defensive Pistol Course. As a newer pistol shooter, I didn’t know what to expect in this course.  I was pleasantly surprised and, as it turned out, very happy that I did not back out of taking the course.  It benefited me a lot to get out of my comfort zone and the instructors, Dave and Kris were beyond exceptional.  Dave “Boon” Benton explained everything in a very clear and concise manner and had all the attendees/students implement what he explained in a step by step manor. As Dave said to me, you learn more by participation which was a very accurate statement.  Both Dave and Kris were very patient and kind in assisting me during the different drills.  The other attendees/students all had much more extensive experience than myself and it concerned me at first as I didn’t want to hold up the class or look completely clueless.  However, Dave and Kris walked me through and guided me through the drills. If I didn’t understand something they took me aside to go through the drill until I understood the concept and how to implement it.  Both Boon and Tanto are definitely the best; they are professionals and offer great instruction.  Even with their accomplishments and heroism, neither one of them showed signs of arrogance.  Actually, they were very humble and friendly.  What stood out to me was at the end, Dave wanted feedback from everybody in ways we could help improve the class or if they needed to do things differently in the course.  I felt both really cared that the students/attendees learned from this.  As I said before, I almost backed out of the course because of nervousness and fear.  After speaking with Judy Wilkinson, she assured me they would make me feel comfortable and help me throughout the course.  She was right on!  I highly recommend this course.  The price of the course is minimal for the education you receive from these two American heroes.  Top stars on this course and these amazing instructors.”

To be taught defensive pistol techniques by two American heroes of Benghazi who have utilized and proven their skills in actual gun battles adds a high level of quality of instruction, and realistic examples and scenarios to a training course.  Tanto and Boon have both personally experienced what works and doesn’t work under fire, and can cut through the unnecessary to give you their battle-proven skills and experience.  One of the most impressive things about learning from these experienced combat veterans is the humble, easygoing nature they both possess and their patience with students.  They answered all questions and gave every student in the course individual instruction and pointers, and managed to make the class an informative and enjoyable experience for the students of all skill levels in the class.
